2 Ways to Engage

Way to Engage #1: Interactive Online Professional Development

The ESCAPE Online PD Courses recreate over 40 hours of professional development and features video from the original PD program and the actual classroom implementation of every ESCAPE lesson. Each course provides a fully interactive online environment, with opportunities to experience the ESCAPE lessons from the student’s perspective and then from the teacher’s perspective so you can better visualize how they can be implemented in your own classroom. These Online PD courses are offered as a free, self-paced resource for teachers who would like to engage with and learn about the ESCAPE curriculum. Join the course to explore the entire PD or to simply focus on how to teach a single ESCAPE Lesson – there is no right or wrong way to engage!

Course Description

This Earth Science course in a series of Teaching Earth Science Through the Arts courses will allow teachers to develop their understanding of Next Generation Science Standards for Life Science, while learning integrative methods for utilizing both hands-on inquiry and Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) educational methods for teaching science through the arts. Teachers will be provided with the hands-on support necessary to implement six NGSS-aligned lessons using Inquiry and VAPA approaches. In addition to the lesson content, teachers will explore topics in elementary science education ranging from how to best engage students in inquiry to supporting ELL students in science. These additional topics are designed to help teachers meet the diverse needs of their students and are spiraled into each inquiry and VAPA approach to teaching elementary science. At this time, these courses are not being offered for credits, but may serve as a resource to teachers who would like to reimagine how they teach science!

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be prepared to teach and engage students in 6 ESCAPE (Equitable Science Curriculum integrating Arts in Public Education) earth science lessons. Teachers will also have a foundational understanding of the Next Generation Science standards, the importance of inquiry in elementary science education, and how various Visual and Performing Arts techniques can be employed in the science classroom to engage students, increase student achievement and scientific language literacy, and to reduce misconceptions.
